Douglass Shoe Factory
Bring a little Marlborough home.
Metal Art Sign · 7 × 5 inches
There is room for a picture on the wall you pass on the way to the kitchen or a favorite chair. The Douglass shoe factory's roof tower and loading platform rise above workers and freight, giving Marlborough's manufacturing scene practical details to notice.
A circa-1910 postcard shows the Douglass shoe factory on Howe Street in Marlborough. Its roof tower, loading platform, workers and horse-drawn freight place the factory within a working neighborhood. The source records local manufacturing; it does not establish that the building used Assabet waterpower.
The factory belongs to Howe Street's working setting, keeping Marlborough's shoe manufacturing attached to a particular building and the activity around it. It can bring this particular place to a room at home, with a small wall space enough to enjoy the picture.
