Douglass Shoe Factory
Bring a little Marlborough home.
Unframed Matte Poster · 11 × 14 inches
After the day's comings and goings, a few minutes at home can include looking a little more closely at the wall picture. The Douglass shoe factory's roof tower and loading platform rise above workers and freight, giving Marlborough's manufacturing scene practical details to notice.
A circa-1910 postcard shows the Douglass shoe factory on Howe Street in Marlborough. Its roof tower, loading platform, workers and horse-drawn freight place the factory within a working neighborhood. The source records local manufacturing; it does not establish that the building used Assabet waterpower.
The factory belongs to Howe Street's working setting, keeping Marlborough's shoe manufacturing attached to a particular building and the activity around it. Frame it in a way that suits the room and keep the historical connection nearby for anyone curious about the picture.
