Jesse Metcalf, Henry J. Steere and Stephen J. Olney founded the Wanskuck Company in 1862, and its main mill was running by 1864, making woolens and later worsted cloth. The mill, its social hall and its workers’ houses still stand in Providence’s Wanskuck neighborhood today.
