Water Battery, Charlestown Navy Yard
Bring a little Charlestown home.
Corkwood Coaster Set · Four pieces · 3.75 × 3.75 inches
Keep the coasters where the family gathers for tea, so a small picture is part of the table along with the cups. Waterfront cannon and the harbor beyond give Charlestown Navy Yard's Water Battery view a defensive setting distinct from its docks and shipways.
A stereograph published circa 1850-1920 shows a waterfront cannon battery with the harbor beyond. The yard's piers and buildings connect this particular view to Boston's history of shipbuilding, repair and harbor work. They preserve a working waterfront at the time of the source.
The battery connects the naval shore with defense of the harbor, keeping a particular waterfront installation within the yard's broader historical landscape. Put them where the kettle's cups are usually gathered, so the view has a place in the ordinary routine of tea at home.
